ROCHESTER, NY – SWBR joined Episcopal SeniorLife Communities (ESLC), residents, staff, and local leaders on April 16 to commemorate the ribbon-cutting of the newly renovated Episcopal Church Home (ECH), a landmark project that reimagines one of Rochester’s largest skilled nursing campuses with a humanistic approach to care.
In an era of rising medical and housing costs, ESLC stands out by providing best-in-class services at an accessible price point. However, leadership sought to expand that impact with a strategic facility overhaul. The mission gained momentum through a New York State Transformation Grant, a multiyear effort supported by SWBR and ultimately awarded in 2023.
With funding secured, our Housing team partnered with ESLC to define improvements that would meaningfully enrich daily life, shifting from an institutional model toward a community rooted in dignity and choice.
Privacy was a key priority. Although license capacities remain the same, nearly all resident rooms have been converted into singles for independence and peace of mind. Spa rooms — previously equipped for two people at a time — were thoughtfully redesigned around a single fixture each, guaranteeing uninterrupted personal care.
Other spaces evolved to meet changing needs. The short-term rehabilitation wing was updated with contemporary finishes, reorganized OT/PT rooms, and oxygen support for residents with higher acuity.
Subtle refinements throughout the building further bolster resident comfort. Neighborhood kitchens, dining rooms, and living areas are brighter with enhanced lighting. Shared spaces — from the lobby and multipurpose room to the salons, library, and private dining — were refreshed to ensure a welcoming first impression.
A relocated reception desk augments flow and wayfinding, while discreet nurse alcoves replace the large, central stations that dominated each floor, contributing to a warm, non-clinical atmosphere.
“Because of our longstanding relationship with ESLC, this project carried a special significance for our team,” noted SWBR Project Manager Liz Reynolds. “From the start, our goal was to cultivate a place that truly feels like home, closely attuned to the needs of those who live here. The new Church Home reflects that commitment and will support ESLC’s vision for people-first care for decades to come.”
SWBR served as Architect of Record, working alongside M/E Engineering P.C. (now Salas O’Brien) and LeChase Construction to design and deliver the $7.6M project.
