We’re proud to announce that Pan-American Square Apartments has been recognized with Engineering News Record (ENR) New York’s 2026 Excellence in Sustainability Award, the publication’s highest honor celebrating projects that demonstrate outstanding environmental performance and sustainable design.
Selected by an independent panel of industry sustainability leaders, the award recognizes projects that advance innovative, responsible approaches to the built environment while creating meaningful benefits for the communities they serve.
Located on a former rail corridor along Delaware Avenue in Buffalo, Pan-American Square Apartments transformed an underutilized site into a vibrant affordable and supportive housing community that combines sustainability, accessibility, and resident well-being. Developed by DePaul in partnership with Christa Construction and our team, the 150-unit development provides homes for older adults, individuals experiencing homelessness, and residents living with serious mental illness, creating stability and opportunity for some of Western New York’s most vulnerable populations.
Designed to achieve Passive House certification, the community reduces energy consumption by up to 75% compared to a typical development while providing healthy, comfortable living environments that support long-term affordability. Thoughtfully integrated supportive services, accessible amenities, community gathering spaces, walking paths, and outdoor gardens help foster connection, independence, and quality of life for residents.
The award winners will be honored at ENR New York’s Best Projects Awards event on November 17 in New York City, with featured project profiles appearing in the October issue of ENR East.
