CHILI, NY – On May 13, SWBR joined Hillside Children’s Center partners and local officials to celebrate the completion of the new residential cottage at the Golisano Campus at Crestwood. The ribbon-cutting marked an early milestone in the campus’ multi-phase Transformation and Modernization Project, launched in 2025.

One of four residential campuses operated by Hillside — a nearly 200-year-old nonprofit serving children and families spanning Western and Central New York — the Golisano Campus at Crestwood provides integrated residential treatment and education for children ages five to 14. Many of those served have experienced trauma and face complex emotional and behavioral challenges, making the physical setting a vital component of recovery.
The project reflects a shift toward smaller-scale, trauma-informed design housing, promoting stability and a sense of belonging with single bedrooms, private bathrooms, therapy rooms, shared living and recreational spaces, and direct access to a courtyard. Building systems and technology upgrades also improve functionality and augment staff collaboration and continuity of care.
“This design is about cultivating a place that truly feels like home, not an institution,” said SWBR Project Manager Jim Vekasy, AIA. “Every decision is guided by research and meaningful discussions to help children feel empowered to heal in a nurturing space.”
Part of a larger campus master plan, the work will bring additional new and renovated units, infrastructure updates, and expanded outdoor amenities shown to positively impact patient outcomes.

A re-envisioned green space will serve as the residential heart of the Golisano Campus at Crestwood, encouraging nature activities and social connection while enhancing circulation and site organization. Together, these changes create a cohesive environment that unites learning, treatment, and everyday life, supported by soothing material palettes and clear wayfinding.

As Architect of Record, SWBR is working in partnership with LeChase (Construction Manager); IPD Engineering (MEP Engineering); and DJA Cornerstone (Owner’s Rep) to deliver the $7M project. With the initial cottage now complete, the Golisano Campus at Crestwood evolution continues — advancing a more inviting, person-centered care nexus that aligns with Hillside’s mission to uplift not only children and families, but entire communities.
