Groundbreaking for RIT’s Music Performance Theater

To accommodate a surge in students engaged in performing arts, an official groundbreaking was held September 6 for Rochester Institute of Technology’s new music performance theater, the first major theater project in the Rochester area in decades.

The three-story, 40,000-square-foot building will consist of a 750-seat theater primarily to be used for musical theater productions. The theater will have two balconies and a historic pipe organ as its centerpiece. The estimated completion date is 2025 and will be available for public use.

The first phase of the project is a 750-seat musical theater venue and includes a historic organ. Phase two, which is funding dependent, features a 1,500 seat concert hall. Once completed, this will provide space for University music, theater, dance, and technology programs and supplement the current options in the greater Rochester area for the community.

SWBR is Architect of Record in collaboration with Design Architect Michael Maltzan Architecture.
