RIT’s Performing Arts Center gives the university’s growing creative community its first dedicated home while establishing a bold new northern gateway to campus. The heart of the facility is a 750-seat theater designed for music, dance, theater, lectures, and visiting performances, supported by a rehearsal room, costume shop, scene shop, and production spaces. Unlike a traditional theater, these educational spaces are on display for the community. The venue seamlessly integrates acoustic immersion and accessibility in a setting where deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing groups experience the arts together. The building’s sculptural form and innovative rainscreen façade create an iconic destination that reflects the creativity and energy of the performing arts at RIT.

A Lobby Built for Gathering

The lobby provides expansive views and great daylighting as a bold green stair draws visitors toward the mezzanine. Conceived as both circulation and social space, the lobby offers places to congregate before and after performances while maintaining a strong visual connection to the campus outside.

Closer to the Performance

Two balconies wrap the theater in a horseshoe configuration, bringing audiences within just 15 feet of the stage. Warm oak elements punctuate the black-box-inspired room, while acoustically tuned surfaces accommodate performances ranging from theater and dance to amplified music.

Tech Takes Center Stage

The Show Extends Outside

The stepped outdoor amphitheater transforms the building’s edge into a place for spontaneous activity. Opening directly to campus, it carries the energy of the Center beyond its walls and into daily student life.
