Genesee Hall

The University of Rochester’s new Genesee Hall integrates academics, athletics, and student life into the residential experience. A big piece of the equation was adding housing for underclassmen athletes, and SWBR was part of the design-build team on the new LEED Silver 72,000 SF residence hall.

The top four floors are residential, featuring singles and doubles, and lounges with ceiling-high windows to maximize sunlight. The main level is dedicated to academic and student life services with meeting rooms and offices to support career, academic, fellowship, and STEM advising. The lower two levels house new locker rooms for men’s and women’s teams, as well as sports medicine, training, rehab, and team equipment rooms. The new residence hall is a modern, air-conditioned facility, housing 151 first-year students. Overlooking the Athletic Complex, it provides them convenient access to the fields and sports facilities, making it easier for them to combine their academic and athletic lives.

The design-build team worked collaboratively throughout the fast-track (16 month concept design to occupancy) schedule to successfully to turn this project over on schedule and on budget. “This new facility more effectively supports existing varsity program needs,” said George VanderZwaag, Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation. “It’s commensurate with current standards for programs of our size and scope.”
