Hope on Main

Downtown acreage revitalized to provide affordable housing and community support.

Hope on Main, the Salvation Army of Buffalo’s reimagined Main Street campus, is a three‑phase initiative introducing an emergency family shelter, a range of affordable and supportive homes, and renewed program facilities designed to strengthen stability and quality of life. From the outset, the effort drew on broad public input through multiple outreach sessions to ensure it genuinely responds to local priorities. The 32-unit, 80-bed shelter will succeed the current 77‑bed location, with all families remaining housed throughout the transition. Future stages will bring 143 apartments, 17 townhomes, and a community hub featuring flexible gathering rooms, worship space, a learning lab, offices, and everyday amenities such as a laundromat.

A New Urban Anchor

Spanning three acres, the campus reshapes the block with a 7-story residential building and a central courtyard — bridging the medical corridor and surrounding homes with cohesive architecture and shared outdoor spaces.

The Community’s Front Door

Superseding the typical road-to-building sequence, a generous plaza positions Main Street as an open civic stage. Framed by preserved brick and modern accents, its transparent two-story venue will become an inviting “porch” for local gatherings.

Human Scale & Rhythm

Walk-up townhomes offer a comfortable edge along North Pearl Street, reflecting neighborhood proportions with stoops and landscaped setbacks. A measured buffer between larger development and nearby houses, they reinforce warmth and long-term identity.
