York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute

Interprofessional education was a design priority for the York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute (WRI). The Institute brings Nazareth’s health and wellness programs speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, art and music therapy, speech and hearing services, social work and a nursing component together under one roof in a collaborative environment.

The design called for significant changes to the Health and Human Services building, and a meaningful addition to accommodate new large-bay therapy and other specialty areas to double clinic and collaboration spaces. Higher-bay spaces were developed for an innovative new overhead lift system for balance mobility and gait training in the Physical Therapy Suite. Space planning and acoustical design were required throughout the facility. These, combined with structural slab isolation and an acoustical floor system were key to the success of the Music Therapy Suite. A central lobby unites the entire program.

The York WRI promotes inter-disciplinary learning and gives students real-world experience providing affordable care under faculty supervision, making it a success for both university and community. “The WRI reflects what Nazareth is all about. It serves our students, but it also the community,” said President Daan Braveman.
