Inter-professional education was a design priority for Nazareth College’s York Wellness and Rehabilitation Institute (WRI). SWBR Architects provided structural engineering, architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and planning services for the $16.5 million project to bring all of Nazareth’s health and wellness fields under one roof.
The design called for structural changes to the existing School of Health and Human Services building and an addition to accommodate large-bay therapy and specialty areas, doubling clinic and collaboration space to 66,700sf. Two 8-bed Nursing Skills Laboratories with central classrooms and three state-of-the-art Patient Simulation Laboratories with a central control room were built. Space planning, detailed acoustical design and an acoustic floor isolation system were used to create privacy. And a double-height central lobby seamlessly tied it all together.
The new WRI promotes inter-discipline learning and gives students real world application through a community clinic where they provide affordable care under faculty supervision, making its success two-fold. “The WRI reflects in many ways what Nazareth is all about. It serves our students, but it also serves the community,” said President Daan Braveman.
