Public Safety Building

Wayne County wanted to bring several agencies and departments under one roof for cost and operational efficiencies. The former County nursing home had been sitting vacant for five years, and was determined to be the ideal spot. SWBR was hired to repurpose the old complex and perform programming to see which agencies would be the best fit.

The facility received exterior improvements including roofing replacement, masonry restoration, window replacement, and upgrades of cladding panels. Inside, conference rooms, public areas and a bright lobby were added. Glass, skylights, natural materials and interior landscaping were used to create an open, non-institutional feel. New mechanical and electrical systems, and an automatic sprinkler system were added.

The 68,000sf complex now houses Emergency Management Offices, Fire and EMS Coordinators, the Sheriff’s Office and many of their ancillary functions; Veterans’ Services, the Board of Elections, the Stop DWI Program and County records storage, with space available for future uses the County may identify. On time and on budget, the new Public Safety Building has saved taxpayers over three million dollars through adaptive reuse.
