Oswego Public Library

SWBR and Tappe Associates have teamed to design the Oswego CSD Public Library. The focus will be on preserving the exterior and significant interior spaces of the existing 3-story, 13,400 s.f. building and provide a 3-story 11,700 s.f. addition.

In previous attempts to renovate the library, various steel and wood structural reinforcement has been added to support the floor and roof structures. Most of the original interior construction, along with the roof, will be removed and a new steel and concrete structure will be inserted to brace the exterior walls. The new structure will provide a large, open space at the upper level. This level will be used for the Children's Room and related youth activities.

While the renovation will remove and replace much of the interior structure of the library, much will be preserved and restored. The exterior brick and stone base will have structural and cosmetic repairs and original windows will be retained and restored. The original entrance foyer with its curved, wood-railed staircases will remain essentially untouched. Brick interior walls will be retained and incorporated into the new layout of staff and support spaces. The main reading room will be restored reusing period metal ceiling elements and replicating column enclosures.
